Aroids didn't evolve in dense potting mix, and most potting mix forgets that. • What it is: a chunky, bark-based mix — orchid bark, composted bark, coco coir, perlite and horticultural charcoal • What it does: holds air around the roots while staying damp enough between waterings • What it isn't: peat-based, and there's no added fertiliser — feeding stays your call • Best for: monstera, philodendron, syngonium, epipremnum, scindapsus, anthurium, alocasia • How far it goes: 7L fills roughly 3–5 pots at 150mm Climbing aroids evolved in loose, highly aerated conditions — scrambling up trunks, rooting into bark, leaf litter and pockets of organic matter rather than sitting in a dense, uniform column of soil. Their roots expect something solid to hold and plenty of gaps around it. Standard potting mix is close to the opposite: fine, uniform, and packing tighter every time you water. Mix is step three. Light, water, mix, then feed — that's the Plant Runner Method. A lot of what gets blamed on overwatering is really a mix problem. Water itself isn't the enemy; trouble starts when the root zone stays saturated long enough to lose the air roots need. So this one is built coarse. Orchid bark and composted bark give the roots structure to hold; perlite keeps the gaps open as the mix settles; coco coir holds enough moisture that it doesn't dry out in a day; horticultural charcoal helps with structure and drainage. No peat — coir does that job without the bog. No added fertiliser, on purpose. There are no slow-release pellets buried in the mix, so you decide what goes in and when rather than inheriting a feeding schedule you can't see. Pair it with Aroid Food and the whole thing is yours to run. Treated for fungus gnats: the mix contains Acelepryn GR, a granular horticultural insecticide included to help control fungus gnat larvae in the growing media. We'd rather deal with them in the mix than leave you to find them later. Use it when you're repotting, or when a new aroid arrives in a mix that's staying dense and wet for too long. Nursery mixes are built for commercial growing conditions — sometimes they translate perfectly to a home, sometimes they don't. Read the mix before you replace it. Built for aroids specifically.
