Weaving Workshop with Tamara McCarthy

Posted by Tamara Campbell on

The very first creative I ever spoke to about doing workshops with was Tamara McCarthy, way back BC (before Covid) and I'm so happy to announce that Tamara has created a beautiful new workshop for us and it's really happening. My regulars will be very familiar with Tamara's beautiful, woven wall hangings. Are you ready to learn some new skills?

Make a necklace, bag charm or key ring. All day workshop.

When: 10am to 3pm Saturday 26th August

Where: THE GREEN SPACE, our beautiful, light filled multipurpose studio 40 Balcombe Rd, Mentone; enter through In Bloom Horticulture

Details: For this workshop we will work with hand dyed raffia and paper yarn to create one off pieces, a key ring, bag charm or necklace. We will learn the ancient art of coiling, a foundation skill of basketry. This workshop is suitable for beginners or intermediate basket makers.

BYO lunch, we will break for 30minutes around midday and you could walk to local cafes to grab something to eat, but we recommend bringing lunch with you. We have tea and coffee onsite and you are welcome to use the fridge / microwave in our kitchenette. There is a coffee window at 10 Balcombe.

About the Artist Tamara McCarthy is a  contemporary maker who uses basketry techniques to create work with natural and plant materials. She loves to push the boundaries of natural materials and try different techniques. Currently focusing on paper made from sustainable birch tree forests in Finland. This paper yarn is versatile, strong and washable and a perfect combination with raffia. Tamara also incorporates seeds, pods and nuts into her work.

Basketry can be addictive and is a great opportunity to slow down.
